Why Gene Hunt had a shopping list

Title: Why Gene Hunt had a shopping list
Rating: White Cortina
Word count: 509
Notes: Written for the poetry prompt challenge on 1973flashfic .  Originally all I posted was Gene's shopping list, but then I thought it should be put in context.

It had been a long hard week and it seemed to Gene Hunt that his DI had been withdrawn for most of it.  They’d had a minor argument at the beginning of the week about how to proceed with the case, which Gene had to admit had involved him bashing Sam none too gently into the filing cabinet, and ever since then all Tyler had said in response to his requests was “If that’s what you want, Guv,” and similar girly answers.  It was now Friday and Gene felt he ought to do something to cheer the younger man up, which was why he was in the local supermarket trying to remember what he’d come in for.

A packet of wafers all pink
A bottle of whisky to drink
A curly wurly or two,
One for me, one for you,
That’s all that I wanted I think.

It had been a long hard week and it seemed to Sam Tyler that his DCI had been totally unreasonable for most of it.  When Sam had suggested that Gene’s approach to the case might not be the best one he’d flown into a rage and Sam still bore the bruises as a result of the encounter.  Then, throughout the week when Sam had thought of saying that they could try something different Hunt had just glared at him, so there was no point in doing anything but going along with him.  It was now Friday and Sam was grateful that it was the end of the week and he could go home and relax, which was why he was in the local supermarket buying items that would improve his Friday evening.

Peppers and onions chopped fine
Mascarpone, a favourite of mine
Hunt’s been at me all week
Never letting me speak
So I’m needing a bottle of wine

They met up at the till.  Gene peered into Sam’s basket.  “Planning on using those for one of them still life paintings?” he asked.  “Can’t think what else you’d want them for.”

“I’m going to use them to make my tea,” Sam growled.  “At least it’ll be healthier than what you’ve bought for yours.  Two curly wurlies, that’s a bit much even for you.”

“I had been going to offer you one of them, as a peace offering.  Not sure it’s such a good idea now.”  Gene sounded hurt.

Sam felt a twinge of guilt.  “If you’d like you could come back with me and I’ll cook tea for both of us.  If you still wanted to share your curly wurlies we could eat them while I cook.”

“Why don’t we get some proper food and take it back to my place.  You can do the cooking whilst I remake the bed.”

With one accord they picked up their baskets and left the queue, accompanied by tutting from the two elderly ladies who were behind them.

We’re buying a large piece of steak
  King Edward potatoes to bake
  Some mushrooms and peas
  I’ll cook them with ease

And follow it with chocolate cake

Queues and grumpy old ladies were always around though. And the price ticket would fall off one item, so the assistant would say "how much was it, dear" and it would be the one thing you couldn't remember, so someone would go off to look, and the old ladies would tut and complain that "if only they'd gone in the other queue". Those were the days.

I liked the contrast between Gene wanting to cheer Sam up and poor Sam needing to unwind with some something tasty. Funny and heartwarming, lovely.

Thank you. For some reason imagining what it feels like after a long week didn't seem too difficult!

Sorry I missed this before! Charming! I also loved the contrast between Sam's intent and Gene's.
